Congratulations to Lina – our new PhD

We are happy to announce that our colleague Lina Gruneau has successfully defended her doctoral thesis Uncertain Precision in Economic Evaluation: Assessing patient management strategies in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease at Linköping University! This milestone is the result of years of hard work, and exceptional talent.

Lina’s determination and passion for learning and her commitment to excellence inspire all of us at Macanda.

A brief overview of Lina’s thesis: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is highly prevalent in the Western world. This thesis explored the cost-effectiveness of patient management strategies, revealing:

  • Broad testing in a MASLD population is not cost-effective in the absence of pharmacological treatments.

  • When accounting for diagnostic tests to initiate a hypothetical fibrosis-modifying treatment, the annual maximum price cannot exceed €1,700 for the overall patient management strategy to be considered cost-effective.

  • Considering downstream consequences affects the incremental costs and QALYs of evaluated patient management strategies but has a limited impact on overall cost-effectiveness.

Overall, the thesis underscores that, to provide valid and fit-for-purpose cost-effectiveness evidence in MASLD, economic evaluations of patient management strategies must carefully consider structural assumptions, diagnostic context, and downstream consequences.

Lina, we couldn’t be prouder! Congratulations on this well-deserved accomplishment – the entire team celebrates with you!
